AFN Grantmaker Conference 2013

Access, Opportunity and Mobility: Strategies that Move Families Forward

Conference Overview

Asset building has emerged as a proven strategy for enabling families to move forward - to live in safe homes and communities, start businesses, pursue education, secure jobs and advance careers, access health care, and save for the future. With assets, people can move from making ends meet to planning for their future. Yet as the wealth gap widens, public and private resources dwindle, and the barriers faced by low-income families become increasingly complex and intertwined, more collaborative solutions are needed.
Come join the Asset Funders Network for our 2013 Grantmaker Conference "Access, Opportunity and Mobility: Strategies that Move Families Forward" this October 2-4 in Washington, DC.  The conference will bring together a diverse group of national, regional and community-based funders concerned about a common goal - financial security for all.
Whether new to the asset building conversation or a long-time funder, AFN's conference  offers a safe and neutral forum for candid conversations among grantmakers, as well as opportunities to learn from leaders in the field and help reshape the discourse about what is possible through effective grantmaking.

  • A keynote on the psychology of scarcity by Dr. Eldar Shafir, author of Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means so Much;
  • The Causes and Consequences of the Wealth Gap: What Do We Know and How Did We Get Here? with commentary from Ray Boshara, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and Thomas Shapiro, Institute on Assets and Social Policy at Brandeis University;
  • A look at current and upcoming research on women and economic mobility by Diana Elliott, Pew Charitable Trusts;
  • A special pre-conference underbanked experience and site visit presented by the Center for Financial Services Innovation; and
  • Hosted networking reception, breakfast table discussions and other opportunities for networking throughout the conference.

Asset building has never been more important for our nation's families, communities and economy.  We encourage you to register today and come join this important conversation in DC!

Pre-Conference Session Overview

Join AFN and the Center for Financial Services Innovation (CFSI) on Wednesday, October 2 from 12:30-4:00pm for an interactive underbanked experience and site visit.

High-quality, accessible, and affordable financial services promoting consumer success are critical ingredients for helping families build assets and move forward toward financial health.  Yet financial access remains a major obstacle for millions of consumers.   This half-day session will allow grantmakers to experience what it is like to manage their financial lives outside of the financial mainstream, to explore an alternative and innovative model from a local practitioner, and to discuss replication or how financial access could be better connected to the participant’s own grant making goals and strategies.

Bring your open mind, your smartphone GPS, and prepare to get out of the office and experience what promises to be an insightful and memorable experience with your colleagues. Space is limited, register today!  Pre-conference fee is a flat $50 for both members and non-members. Register at main conference registration page.
